East Wing Archives

The East Wing Archives holds Ashborne’s institutional records from its founding in 1789 to the present. The archive is maintained by the Office of Institutional Affairs.

Access Notice. Access to pre-1950 materials requires a written request submitted to the Office of Institutional Affairs. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Processing time is variable. Some materials are restricted under the terms of the 1923 Benefactor Agreement and cannot be released without family consent.

Founding Documents

1789 – 1850

Original institutional charters, founding correspondence, and the university compact. Includes early governance records and the 1789 articles of establishment.

Restricted

Pre-1850 materials subject to benefactor consent requirements.

Faculty Records

1789 – present

Appointment records, tenure documentation, and departmental correspondence. Records prior to 1900 held in physical form only.

Partial Access

Records from 1950 onward available on written request. Earlier records require OIA review.

Historical Correspondence

1789 – 1980

Institutional letters, inter-departmental memoranda, and external correspondence. Includes communications with benefactor representatives.

Restricted

Access to benefactor correspondence requires written consent from the relevant foundation.

Endowment Instruments

1789 – present

Original endowment agreements, scholarship terms, and benefactor funding instruments. Current instruments held by the Fellowship Office.

Restricted

Original instruments from 1789 to 1923 restricted under the terms of the 1923 Benefactor Agreement.

Student Records

1900 – 1970

Historical enrolment records, examination results, and graduation registers. Records from 1970 onward are held by the Registrar's Office.

Open Access

Available to registered researchers. No personal data requests.

Photographic and Visual Archive

1887 – 1990

Campus photography, ceremonial records, and Founders' Day documentation. Some photographic materials from private collections on long-term loan.

Partial Access

Founders' Day materials from 1789 to 1922 unavailable pending review.

Requesting Access

Written requests for restricted materials should be submitted to the Office of Institutional Affairs. Requests must specify the collection, date range, and purpose of research. Incomplete requests will not be processed.

Requests involving materials subject to the 1923 Benefactor Agreement will be forwarded to the relevant family representative. The university does not guarantee a timeline for review or a decision on access.

The Office does not accept in-person requests without a prior appointment. Walk-in enquiries will be redirected.
